13 women athletes, in 2 disciplines, training at STC Peddem Goa, No Coach.
39 Women athletes, 4 disciplines and 2 Coach. Goa would host 37th National Games this year under the leadership of Govind Gaude.
In response to the Rajya Sabha Starred Question No. 371 for 06.04.2023 regarding SAI (Sports Authority Of India) Training Centres in Goa asked by Shri Luizinho Joaquim Faleiro, Hon’ble MP. The data presented here was submitted by Government of India.
While Goa is supposed to be all ready to host the 37th National Games in November, after a visit by Indian Olympic Association team and other officials, including PT Usha, “green signal” was given for the same.
Needless to say, Prime Minister would inaugurate the games, which were held last year in Gujarat.
There are some amusing facts though. At present, there are two (2) SAI Training Centres (STCs) in Goa, namely, STC Ponda and STC Peddem.
Of the 2 STCs (SAI Training Centers) in Goa; there are only 25 Goan origin athletes training, out of 74. This is despite the fact, that these two training centers were established to promote Sports in Goa, were local athletes can train.
While an argument can be made, that sometimes athletes from one state prefer to train at a much better location, because of better facilities and coaches.
But the brutal fact is that, Peddem STC do not have even an Athletic or Kabbadi coach, while 8 and 5 women athletes are respectively training there.
Perhaps the most starling statistics is that while; There are 4 Coaches available for athletes from 2 disciplines at Ponda STC; At Peddem STC which is an all women’s training center, only 2 Coaches available for 39 athletes, from 4 disciplines.
While these are Government of India run centers, surely any sensible Sports Minister, would like to keep a tab of sports training facilities, available for sportsmen and their current status, which includes the efficacy. But it seems, Mr.Govind Gaude has just too much on his plate.
