Truth was the second casualty, after the murder of Finnish/Swedish tourist Felix Dahl at Patnem, Goa.
The IO, rather than trying to find the truth, behind the unnatural death, and investigating it with impartial sincerity, brushed aside it as an "accidental fall"!
"Investigation of the Crime is a solemn duty imposed by law on the police officers. The duty of the investigating officer is not merely to bolster up a prosecution case with such evidence as may enable the Courts to record convictions but to bring out the real unvarnished truth."
Tourists, in a country like India, are very easy targets for rogue elements to commit crime. They are gullible, have cash and other valuable stuff; and being in a foreign country not known for swift & transparent investigation, thus devoid of the support system, which could protect them.
The perpetrator also knows, the archaic and antique criminal procedures and how burdened, the entire system is, which would dissuade a tourist to seek legal and remedial help, and fight for long, in a country like India.
When a tourist comes to India, he puts his entire faith in the law of the land, after God. And it is the duty of the host country to uphold this faith.
A dead body is found in the wee hours of 28th January 2015, at Patnem, Goa.
Usually, under such circumstances, for a sane Police Officer, it should raise a number of questions in her/his mind.
After all, most of the unnatural deaths/murders happen during the silence of the night, because it is so easy for the perpetrator to not only commit that crime, but also to get away with it easily.
For an IO, who has spent considerable number of years in Police Service, this should come as a second nature, to cast doubt on the cause of the nature of death, under such circumstances..
In fact, it is such common sense that, it does not take in fact a Police Officer to behave such, it is human nature. It is so because most heinous of crimes happen in dark.
But, in the case of Felix Dahl, the IO (Investigation Officer) so casually implies that this could be the result of an accidental fall, and he could have hurt himself by falling at the edge of tar road, where there were a few stones.
The truth was the second casualty, in this case of Felix Dahl's Murder.
The said IO, now heads the Anjuna Police Station, in North Goa. Anjuna Police Station is perhaps the most important Polce Station in Goa.
